In freshwater aquariums, fine sand is ideal for species that like to dig (such as Corydoras and dwarf cichlids), preventing damage to their barbels. In Amazonian or Asian biotopes, light sand replicates natural environments, while dark sands enhance the colors of fish and reduce reflections.
In marine aquariums, aragonite sands help stabilize pH and KH, providing useful support for denitrifying bacteria. There are also neutral decorative sands, designed solely for aesthetics and completely inert.
For grain size, color, and chemical effect, consult the product sheets of individual items.
Tip: choose the grain size based on the inhabitants of the tank; sand that is too coarse hinders digging, while sand that is too fine can compact, reducing circulation.
