Marine Water Conditioners
Marine water conditioners neutralize chlorine and chloramines, bind heavy metals, and can temporarily detoxify ammonia/nitrites, making the water safer for fish and invertebrates during quick mixes or emergencies.

When to use them: In marine aquariums, the ideal is to work with reverse osmosis water with TDS ~0 + salt; the water conditioner is only needed if you use tap water (emergencies, quick mixes) or to neutralize disinfectant residues in top-off water.
How they work: They reduce chlorine/chloramines, chelate metals, and convert ammonia into less toxic forms, giving biological filtration and the skimmer time to work.
Reef-safe & skimmer: Choose formulas specific for marine/reef. Some additives can make the skimmer “go crazy” (over-foam): reduce or turn off the skimmer for 2–6 hours after dosing and slightly increase aeration.
Good practices: Dose into the mixing container before adding salt, follow label instructions, do not overdose, and check parameters with reliable tests. UV/ozone off if the manufacturer indicates it.
Tip: If possible, stick to reverse osmosis water + salt and use the water conditioner only as a “parachute.” If using tap water, treat and aerate the water for 15–30 minutes, then mix in the salt and allow salinity/pH to stabilize before adding it to the tank.
