Medicines and Marine Protective Products

Medicines and protective agents for marine aquariums help manage critical situations in reef and fish-only tanks: antiparasitic, antibacterial, antiprotozoal, anti-stress adjuvants, and products for dips/disinfection (e.g., iodine for corals).

Diseases:
Marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans)
Velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum)
“Clownfish Disease” (Brooklynella hostilis)
Uronema (Uronema marinum)
• Secondary bacterial infections, lesions, opportunistic mycoses.

Correct Use (essential guidelines):
• When possible, isolate in a hospital tank (no rocks/sand, mature sponge filter, high aeration).
Remove carbon/resins and turn off UV/ozone during the treatment cycle; many formulas cause hyper-skimming: adjust or turn off the skimmer for a few hours and increase oxygenation.
• In reef tanks, only use reef-safe products; copper-based treatments should be done only in a hospital tank (copper is lethal to invertebrates/corals and is absorbed by rocks).

Protective Agents and Adjuvants: anti-stress/vitamins to support fish mucous membranes and appetite; iodine dips for soft/hard corals in case of stressed tissues or wounds; products for spot disinfection on coral bases/rocks (following label instructions carefully).

Prevention & Best Practices: quarantining new animals, varied and rich feeding, stable parameters (salinity, temperature, KH), and regular filter/skimmer maintenance drastically reduce relapses and infections.

Important Warnings: do not mix similar medications, do not dose in top-off water, use reverse osmosis water for water changes; complete cycles with a water change as per label and reinstall carbon/UV at the end of treatment.

Tip: prepare a 4-step plan (probable diagnosis → hospital tank → protocol → final water change). Keep aeration high and monitor ammonia/nitrites in the hospital tank: biological filtration may slow down during treatment.
