Refractometer Function

The aquarium refractometer measures the salinity (concentration of dissolved salts) of water, a fundamental parameter in marine and reef aquariums.

Key Features

  • Integrated LED light for optimal visibility in any condition
  • ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation) for consistently precise measurements
  • Dual scale: Salinity (0–100‰) and Density (1.000–1.070 SG)
  • Battery-powered LED with long life
  • High-quality metal body and optical glass
  • Quick and easy calibration
  • Ideal for marine, reef, brackish aquariums, and saltwater preparation

Calibration Procedure

To ensure maximum precision, calibrate before first use and periodically (every 1–2 weeks):

  1. Clean the prism with a soft, dry cloth
  2. Apply a drop of distilled or deionized water to the optical prism
  3. Close the clear cover and wait 30 seconds for the temperature to stabilize
  4. Turn on the LED to illuminate the reading field
  5. Look through the eyepiece: the line between the light and dark areas should be exactly at 0 (zero)
  6. If necessary, adjust the calibration screw with the supplied screwdriver
  7. Clean the prism with distilled water and dry thoroughly before measurement

For maximum precision, you can use a 35 ppt calibration solution, setting the scale to that value instead of 0.

How to Use

  1. Take a drop of water from the aquarium (temperature approx. 25°C)
  2. Place it on the prism and close the cover
  3. Turn on the LED light and wait a few seconds
  4. Look through the eyepiece and read the salinity (ppt) or density (SG) value
  5. After each use, clean and thoroughly dry the prism

Advantages of the LED Model

  • Perfect visibility even in dark or poorly lit environments
  • More stable and reflection-free measurements
  • Independent operation from ambient light
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)
  • Robust, practical, and easy-to-use design

Maintenance and Tips

  • Clean the prism after each use with distilled water
  • Do not use aggressive or abrasive detergents
  • Store in a dry place away from heat
  • Replace LED batteries when brightness decreases
  • Recalibrate regularly to maintain accuracy

💡 Expert Tip: Calibrate the refractometer every 1-2 weeks with distilled water or a 35 ppt solution to ensure consistently precise salinity measurements, a crucial parameter for the health of your marine aquarium inhabitants.
